Theofania i Grekland

Vår moderkyrka i Grekland firade som vanligt Theofania vid hamnen i Oropos, som är vår synods ordförandes officiella biskopssäte. Troende från Athen och från hela Grekland samlades vid dörranrna till den magnifika katedralen helgad till den Heliga Xenia, efter morgonliturgin som hade celebrerats av Biskop Auxentios av Photiki, från vårt amerikanska exarkat, och Biskop Ambrosios av Methoni, assistent till Metropoliten. Skaran troende gick så i procession den ca 2 kilometer långa vägen till hamnen. Förutom alla troende deltog vår synods 24 monastiska kommutiteter, en stor skara präster och diakoner och 7 biskopar. Filis stadsorkester spelade till processionen. Många politiska dignitärer deltog också i firandet.

Moder Parthenia insomnad i vår Herre.

Moder Parthenia (Matoushka Monica) insomnade stilla på Ersta hospice, Stockholm, torsdagen den 8/21 januari 1999, två dagar efter firandet av Theofania, i en ålder av 60 år.

"O vilken kärlek, underbar, sann" skaldade den svenske diktaren Sandell-Berg 1889. Hon syftade på vår Herre Jesus Kristus när hon skrev dessa ord. Enligt ortodoxt kristen tro lever Kristus i alla som döpts till honom. Han lever i alla och verkar i alla. Matoushka Monica Deurloo var en person i vilken många av oss som fick lära känna henne kunde se Kristi kärlek. Hon var och är ett föredöme för alla i och utanför de Heliga Konstantin och Helena ortodoxa församling, Stockholm. Det fanns ingen som hon inte kunde omhulda i sitt hjärta – hur osympatiskt de än hade betett sig mot andra eller henne själv. Hennes kärlek till Gud, den Ortodoxa kyrkan och medmänniskan överskuggade allt hon företog sig. Matoushka Monica var en person som inte lämnade någon oberörd. Alltid glad, ödmjuk och optimistisk, villig att se alla människors positiva sidor. Under hennes långa sjukdomstid förstärktes dessa egenskaper och i takt med hennes avtagande hälsa utökades hennes medkänsla för andra människor på ett nästan övermänskligt sätt.

Matoushka Monica föddes i Stockholm och efter gymnasiestudier och språkstudier i Frankrike arbetade hon som kontorist vid bland annat Stockholms elverk och Stockholms stads bokauktionskammare för att fram till sin bortgång vara anställd vid först Konstakademin och sedan från 1978 vid Konsthögskolan. Sin längsta tid där var hon registrator och arkivarie.

Matoushka Monica var gift i över tre decennier med Fader Johannes, känd som en skicklig ikonmålare och lärare i ikonmålning samt kyrkoherde i de Heliga Konstantin och Helenas ortodoxa församling i Vårberg, Stockholm. Matoushka Monica har under en lång rad av år gjort många betydelsefulla insatser för svensk ortodoxi genom ett omfattande översättningsarbete av engelska och franska texter, både gudstjänstritual och ortodox teologi. I mer än åtta år fungerade hon också som redaktör för församlingsbladet "Ortodoxt Kyrkoliv", ett hårt pionjärarbete som hon i mångt och mycket utförde ensam, men med stor glädje.

Under Matoushka Monicas sista dygn på jorden tonsurerades hon till nunna av det stora Schemat enligt hennes egen önskan och erhöll så namnet Moder Parthenia och skrevs in vid klostret De Heliga Änglarna Afidnai Attikis (Grekland). Tonsureringen skedde på samma dag som hennes dotter hade blivit nunna åtta år tidigare. Samma dygn som hennes insomnande kom Biskop Ambrosios flygande tillsammans med Dr Loukas Pallis från Grekland. De upphämtades vid flygplaten och fördes direkt till Ersta hospice. Där sent på natten till fredagen kunde sedan några ortodoxa kvinnor klä Moder Parthenia på sedvanligt sätt under Biskop Ambrosios överseende. Dagen efter besegrades svensk byråkrati och som genom ett under blev det möjligt att få fullfölja ortodox begravningssed. På fredagens afton kunde därmed kistan ställas upp i Heliga Konstantin och Helenas kyrka och läsningen ur psaltaren kunde börja, som sedan pågick hela natten. På lördagens morgon firades först en hierarkisk Gudomlig liturgi som sedan följdes av nunnebegravningen. Kortege åkte sedan från kyrkan till Skogskyrkogården där hon kunde gravsättas i det nya ortodoxa kvarteret av kyrkogården.

Vi önskar Moder Parthenia: Evig åminnelse!

Fader Johannes arkimandrit.

I den ljusa veckan 1999, dvs veckan efter påsk, reste Fader Johannes Deurloo till Grekland. Efter tre veckors vistelse i de heliga Kyprianos och Justinas kloster där vår Metropolit Kyprianos av Oropos och Fili residerar, tonsurerades Fader Johannes till rasophormunk med namnet Johannes efter den Helige Johannes (Maximovitch) av Shanghai och San Francisco. Han upphöjdes också till arkimandrit. Vi önskar därför Fader Johannes: god botgöring.

Fader Christofer Klasson avsomnad

Den ljusa tisdagen 31 mars/13 april insomnade den serbisk-ortodoxe prästen Fader Christofer Klasson i vår Herre 85 år gammal. Han konverterade i 50 års åldern till den Ortodoxa kyrkan och blev så småningom prästvigd efter ett tidigare yrkesverksamt liv som präst i Svenska kyrkan och aktiv inom svensk högkyrklighet. Fader Christofer är sannolikt den svensk som betytt mest för utvecklingen av en svensk språkig ortodoxi. De flesta känner hans översättningar av liturgiska texter och använder dagligen den bönbok som han ställde samman. Begravning av Fader Christofer ägde rum på lördagen den Ljusa veckan i den Helige Demetrios kyrka, Kristianstad. Vi önskar: Evig åminnelse!

Sveriges andra ortodoxa kloster grundat

Det är med glädje vi kan rapportera att den 21 november/4 december 1998, Gudaföderskans intåg i templet, invigde Hans Nåd Biskop Dosithei av Storbritannien och Skandinavien från den Serbisk-ortodoxa kyrkan en liten stuga på Ekerö strax utanför Stockholm till kloster med namnet Gudaföderskans intåg i templet. Klostrets abbedissa är Moder Christodoli, vigd till det Stora Skemat som också är klostrets enda innevånare. Moder Christodoli är född i Sverige och konverterade till den Ortodoxa kyrkan på 70-talet under Fader Christofer Klasson (se nekrolog) i Kristianstad. I början av 80-talet vigdes hon till rasophornunna vid den Helige Spyridons kloster i östra Grekland. Vi önskar Moder Christodoli: Många år i sin klostergärning.

Pilgrimsfärd

Arkimandrit Johannes Agiokyprianites, Fader Anders Åkerström samt lekmännen Christina Rassmundsson och Sofia Weman åker 9/22 juni till Rumänien för att delta i gloririeringen av Metropolit Glicherie av Rumänien i Kristi Förklaringskloster, Slatioara.

Krisen i Kosovo

Det är med förskräckelse vi följt den mer än två månader långa krisen i Kosovo, Natos krig mot Serbien och den tragedi som utspelar sig där. Det var med tårar i ögonen vi läste om hur cyniska brittiska piloter lät göra dekaler till sina bomber och missiler som de fällde under den ortodoxa påsken med ordalydelsen "Happy Eastern Serbia" (Glad påsk Serbien). Vi noterar att då USA varit inblandade i krig mot muslimska länder, som nu senast mot Irak, så har man respekterat stora högtider som Ramadan, men mot ortodoxa länder och ortodox tro kan man inte visa någon respekt. Mot detta har vi reagerat starkt och vi uppmanar kontinuerligt alla våra troende att bedja intensivt för fred och försoning och att lidandet skall upphöra. Vi väljer här att återge två brev från vår systerkyrka, den Ryska Utlandskyrkan, som får belysa våra åsikter i frågan. Det första brevet är ett officiellt uttalande från den heliga synoden och det andra brevet är från vår synods gode vän och tillskyndare Biskop Evtikhy, som en av våra präster, Fader Anders Åkerström, har koncelebrerat ihop med ett flertal gånger. Vi har valt att inte översätta breven till svenska och hoppas att detta inte skall utgöra ett hinder för läsaren:

Concerning the Military Action Being Undertaken in the Balkans

The military action being undertaken in the Balkans for more than a month now has only intensified age-old ethnic strife on the territory of long-suffering Serbia.

After a respite of half a century, bombs are again falling on European cities and villages, this time in the name of falsely proposed "human values" selected in a prejudicial and hypocritical way. What is right and just is being trampled underfoot shamelessly and with impunity. The nations which comprise the NATO alliance are basing their activities not on their conscience or morality, but exclusively on blatant use of force.

The bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia are compelled to address the conscience of men, who in word at least claim to be "civilized"; with a condemnation of their barbaric assault on the defenseless populace of Orthodox Serbia, and with an urgent call for them to cease immediately the slaughter of innocent people and the destruction of that country, thereby averting the spread of the present military conflagration to an even wider territory.

Violating the very bases of international law and human dignity, the nations which comprise NATO, without any real justification or reason, are acting solely on their personal political calculations and biases. Furthermore, they are shamelessly slaying both Serbs and non-Serbs, destroying inhabited homes, monasteries and holy places, historical monuments and industry, thereby depriving the Serbian people of the means of physical existence for many decades to come.

All of this is being done in the name of the dubious separatists desires of an insignificant handful of terrorists who have set it as their objective to cut out of Serbia the heart of its spiritual self-consciousness and existence, the cradle of its national sense—Kosovo and Metokhija.

Ignoring history and bringing death upon the grandchildren of those very Serbs who so bravely fought in support of the West during World War II, the authors, advocates of the present attacks are consciously deceiving their own citizens, characterizing their own actions as "aid to the suffering, and peace-making."

Yet they have not hesitated to kill people and destroy churches even during the holy days of Passion Week and on the radiant feast of the Resurrection of Christ!

We, the bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, affirm: God and His saints are not mocked.

The blasphemous and pitiless assault by an overwhelming military force against a small and helpless people, which is bringing suffering upon the innocent residents of Kosovo and all Serbia, both Orthodox and non-Orthodox, will be turned back upon those who are wielding this sword of injustice.

We believe-and we see countless proofs of history—that retribution will come not only in this age, but in that which is to come as well.

O you mighty of this world! If you do not fear God, fear yourselves! For aggression invariably redounds upon those who tread its pernicious path.

We, the bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, pray for Orthodox Serbia and for all who live within its boundaries; and we call upon all of our faithful to do so as well.

May the Lord grant peace and prosperity to our fellow Orthodox brethren who are now undergoing this terrible trial. May their steadfastness in the Faith, in love and goodness, be strengthened, and may their tears find consolation. May the murderers of innocent victims be confounded.

We greet the bishops and clergy of the much-suffering Church of Serbia with a fraternal kiss, and ask their holy prayers for us, who share their great grief and sorrow.

May our tears be transformed into joy, in accordance with the true and unshakable testament of our Savior, the risen Lord Jesus Christ

The attack of Nato on the much-suffering Jugoslavia

Long before the present tragedy in Yugoslavia, we were already sensed a terrible foreboding while observing the involvement of western countries in the internal affairs of the sovereign nation of Yugoslavia and its Serbian people. It was then that we had realized that after the Serbs, the Russians would inevitably suffer as well. Common sense had warned: today Serbia, tomorrow Russia. With Yugoslavia being bombed, we understand that this military strike is against Russia as well. This attack cannot be considered an awful mistake by virtue of its stupidity of one or a group of politicians, but rather the realization of a well-planned, cunning plot.

It is obvious to any observer that Russia cannot remain uninvolved in Yugoslavia’s catastrophe. Even if this act of aggression were to cease today, Russia has already suffered a loss. Russia’s crisis has now deepened. We witness how Russia is being deliberately involved in a worldwide military conflict, the consequences of which will affect all spheres of its government. And this is all happening at a time when governmental order and economic structure are on the verge of collapse. No number of interest-free loans or humanitarian aid could cover the loss brought upon Russia by this wide international provocation.

All of the aforementioned can be applied to Belorussia and the Ukraine.

How can this not reflect upon the moral condition of the Russian people, when their brother Slavs are suffering from bomb and missile attacks; those very people who are so close to the Russian heart, who were so responsive to the needs of the Russians by giving them bread and shelter when they were exiled, giving refuge to hundreds of thousands during the days of Russia’s calamity. Yet now we are being told cold-heartedly to observe our brothers being killed by bombs and missiles. These bombs directly hit our hearts. The anvil of dishonest politics, where the strongest rule, is now reshaping the morals of society, inadvertently mutilating it.

The truth cannot be ignored that the Serbian people are the prominent custodians of the Orthodox faith on the European continent. The massacre of the Serbian people first by the separatists and now by NATO’s bombs is a direct strike on the Orthodox faith.

True Orthodox consciousness cannot be in agreement with the immorality and inhumanity of the so-called New World Order. By proclaiming a total liberation of the individual under the slogan of "universal values," the New World Order is actually destroying moral and religious foundations, self-existence and self-consciousness, and the untouchable values of both the individual and of a nation as a whole. We can now see how the New World Order intends to deal with the independent thinking of us Orthodox: either by distorting it or physically annihilating it.

How can we Orthodox defend ourselves from the warring elements of the world’s evil?

By faith, fasting, prayer and repentance. Holy Scripture teaches: .This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith (I St. John 5:4).

Let these madmen cease their fight against the bearers of the Faith, for in the end they are fighting against themselves. They may conquer the world, but they will lose their souls. And what is a person without a soul?!

With a few more treacherous acts, all of the super armaments and super power of those that strive for world domination will become meaningless, since their very descendants will be corrupted from within. (What is sown is reaped.) They will be swept away from their power by their very children, who will be their curse; and then these "lords" will curse their senseless lives. The winds of war in Yugoslavia are a dangerous step towards this suicidal path. People, come to your senses and stop this war for your own self-preservation.

Orthodox people! Pray and observe the commandments of God, so that the Lord will hear us, be merciful to His people, and stop the bloodshed.

O Lord! Remember not our sins, but by Thy mercy be merciful to our suffering Serbian brethren. Preserve Yugoslavia. Do not allow a world war. Grant hardened hearts peace by Thy mercy. And direct all to the path of repentance and good deeds. Amen.
